May Inshore Fishing Report 2025
May Inshore Fishing Report – Folly Beach, SC
With Captain John – Folly Beach Fishing Charters
As we roll into May, the inshore fishing around Folly Beach is really starting to heat up—both in terms of weather and the bite. Water temps are rising steadily into the mid 70s, and the backwaters and creeks are alive with action. This is one of Captain John’s favorite times of year, and for good reason.
Redfish Ready for Action
The redfish bite is consistent and aggressive right now. We’re finding schools cruising the flats on the outgoing tide, tailing in the grass on higher tides, and stacked up near oyster rakes. Live mud minnows and shrimp under popping corks have been producing, but artificial lures like Z-Man paddletails on jigheads are also getting solid hookups. Sight fishing opportunities are increasing as water clarity improves—don’t forget your polarized shades!
Speckled Trout Making a Strong Showing
May marks the return of good numbers of speckled sea trout. We’re catching them in deeper creek bends and along grassy points, especially during moving tides. Mud minnows and live shrimp under corks have been the top producers. Some days, the trout are dialed in and hitting hard—Captain John reports solid catches in the 15-20 inch range.
Flounder Starting to Show Up
Flatties are beginning to make their appearance in typical ambush spots—edges of creeks, docks, and sandy drop-offs. The bite is still building, but we’re picking off a few nice ones here and there. A slow retrieve mud minnow on a jighead is your best bet.
Bonus Catches & Shark Action
As the water warms, we’re also starting to see an uptick in black drum and bluefish. Captain John had a recent trip where a group of kids reeled in a few bonnethead sharks—great fun and plenty of excitement for a spring day on the water.
Tips from the Captain:
Tide is key: Plan your trips around moving water for best results.
Keep it light: 10-15 lb braid with 20 lb fluorocarbon leader is perfect for most inshore targets.
Captain John’s trips are filling up fast this month, and it’s easy to see why. The fish are here, the weather is beautiful, and the Charleston Lowcountry is showing off. Whether you're a seasoned angler or just looking for a fun day on the water, May is prime time to book a charter and experience the inshore bite firsthand.
Tight lines and see you on the water!
