Folly Beach Fishing Report: Speckled Trout Bite Heating Up!
May 2025
As the waters around Folly Beach continue to warm with the arrival of late spring, the speckled trout bite has turned on in a big way—and we’ve been right in the middle of the action here at Folly Beach Fishing Charters.
Over the past couple of weeks, we've been targeting trout in the early mornings and late afternoons, when water temps hover in the sweet spot and the bait is moving. Most of the action has been in the creeks and along grass lines during moving tides. The outgoing tide has produced especially well, pulling bait from the flats and setting up perfect ambush points for hungry trout.
What’s Working:
Live shrimp under popping corks remains the go-to setup. The bite has been aggressive, and we're seeing a solid mix of keeper-sized trout in the 14-18" range, with a few larger gators pushing 22"+ making surprise appearances. For anglers looking for more of a challenge, soft plastics on jig heads (especially paddle tails in natural colors) have been producing well in slightly deeper holes and drop-offs.
Hot Spots:
The creeks mouths
Inlet areas during higher tides
Shell banks during early morning ebb tide
Tips for Success:
Focus on cleaner water with active bait movement
Keep your bait just above the oyster beds to avoid snags and maximize strikes
Don’t be afraid to move spots every 30-45 minutes if the action slows—trout have been on the move!
Looking Ahead:
With stable weather and warming conditions forecasted, the trout fishing should remain strong through May and into June. If you’re planning a trip, now’s the time to book—this is some of the best light tackle action of the season.
We’ve got availability for both half-day and full-day inshore trips, and whether you’re a seasoned angler or new to the game, we’ll get you on the fish.
Tight lines,
Capt. John
